Articles in English Grammar

Definition:-
They are used to identify the singular and plural.
              TYPES OF ARTICLES

THE
           







USE OF A:
  1. With singular and countable noun.
  2. With consonant.
e.g. A boy, A cat etc.
  1. With consonant sound.
e.g. A University, A European, A Union etc.
  1. If an object is countable, we use “a”  before it when it begins with a consonant
e.g. A table has four legs etc.

USE OF AN:
  1. With singular and countable noun with vowels.
e.g. An Umbrella, An Egg etc.
  1. With vowels sound (A, O, ALIPH)
e.g. An Hour, An Honest, An M.A, An M.B.B.S, An M.B.A etc.
  1. If an object is countable, we use “an”  before it when it begins with a vowel
e.g. An Elephant has a trunk etc.

USE OF THE:
  1. With singular, plural, countable and uncountable noun.
  2. With specific thing or noun.
e.g. The USA, The K2, The Dawn, The tomb of Quaid etc.
  1. When you take the object has something particular, you write “the” with it e.g., the cow in the shad is grazing. 
  2. You should not use “the” with names except with:-
1.      The names of rivers, e.g., The Indus, the Ganges.
2.      The name of seas and oceans, e.g., The Arabian Sea, The Indian Ocean, The pacific etc.
3.      The name of Mountains, e.g., The Alps, the Himalayas etc.
4.      The names of islands, e.g., The West Indies, The Fiji Islands etc.
5.      The names of holy books, e.g., The Quran, the Bible.
6.      The names of news papers, e.g., The Dawn, The Jang.
7.      The names of direction, e.g., The East, The North, The South etc.
8.      The names of stars and planets, e.g., The Sun, the moon, etc
9.      The names of nations, e.g., The French, The Pakistanis,
10.  The names of great historical events, e.g., The Second World War, The Pakistan Resolution, The French Renaissance etc.


11.  The names of buildings, e.g., The High Court, The assembly, The Secretariat etc.
12.  The titles r positions, e.g., The Quaid-e-Azam, The Chief Justice, The Quran of England, The Pope, The president.
13.       The” is also used before the name of a place which has some geographical importance, e.g.
14.  The U.S.A. is called co because it is formed by the union of fifty one states of America. Therefore we call it the United States of America.
15.  The Punjab is called, so because the five ricers of Pakistan unite over here. Therefore we call it the Panjab.

16.  The British Isles is called so because it is formed by the union of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, Therefore we call it the British Isles. The is always used before Superlative Degree, e.g., the oldest, the longest, the greatest, the smallest,
